Groundswell’s Sophia Dawson Recognized as Brooklyn Extraordinary Woman

Categories: Other

Groundswell is pleased to share the exciting news that Sophia Dawson has been recognized by the Kings County District Attorney’s office as a “Brooklyn Extraordinary Woman.”

Sophia is honored for her impressive service in her community and outstanding character.

This March, District Attorney Charles Hynes will introduce Sophia alongside 30 other women, one for each day of the month, and bestow the title of “Neighborhood Ambassador” on each of them.

Sophia shares her talents each day with Groundswell as both an Assistant Lead Muralist and Office Manager. Outside of Groundswell’s studio, she is a New York University Graduate student in the Visual Arts Administration Program at Steinhardt and practicing visual artist.

Sophia began her tenure with Groundswell as a teen artist in our afterschool programs.

As Sophia shares, “Experiences from Groundswell helped to prepare me for the intense studio work that would come in both my undergraduate years as well as my current status as an emerging artist. I understand the importance of research in the work that I do, and I have developed a habit of working large, something I feel is a direct effect of mural making. Groundswell has truly helped me to realize the power that art possesses.”

Congratulations, Sophia, on this well-deserved award!
