It May Be Freezing Outside...

But things are heating up at Groundswell!

As the sidewalks begin to thaw, Groundswell has news that is hot off the press!

After some heated discussion at Groundswell's Annual Retreat earlier this month, Groundswell's Making His'tory and Voices Her'd mural teams have identified some potential topics of interest for their spring research and summer mural projects.

Groundswell youth expressed particular interest in exploring police-community relations in communities of color and gendered sexual violence and the culture that perpetuates it. These topics would build on our 2014 Making His'tory mural on mass incarceration and the prison-industrial complex and the 2014 Voices Her'd mural on reproductive justice and young motherhood.

Additionally, this week, teams of Groundswell artists are bundling up and heading out to seven middle- and high- schools in Brooklyn and the Bronx for the kick-off of our Cultural After School Adventure (CASA) art-making projects, with support from the New York City Council. These teams will meet weekly to research, design, and fabricate a mural for their school or the surrounding community.

Finally,  Groundswell's Teen Empowerment Mural Apprenticeship teams are warming up for their design sharings with partners Row New York and Ellis Island National Monument and Museum in just a few short weeks. Once these designs are approved, they will begin fabrication!

Stay tuned for project updates on Groundswell's Facebook and Twitter as winter defrosts into spring!
