Making the Impossible Possible

Spring is one of Groundswell's favorite times of year.

It's when we get to share in the joy of one of life's most exciting, nerve-wracking, and proud moments- opening that college acceptance letter.

This year, we are beaming with pride to announce that 100% of our Portfolio Development seniors were accepted to, and plan to attend, some very prestigious art schools and universities this fall, including the Fashion Institute of Technology, the School of Visual Art, Parsons the New School for Design, and Pratt Institute.

The exuberance around the studio is unmatched. For so many of our young people, they have just learned that all their hard work and dedication has paid off.

They have just learned that they will be making a huge step toward achieving big dreams. That the impossible is now much more possible.

For many of them, they have just learned that they will be the first in their family to go to college.

Miyah Harris, a Fall Portfolio Development participant, is excited to be attending F.I.T in the fall. She will be attending with some old friends, and is excited to make new ones. For her, the decision was easy: "F.I.T offers the best of both worlds for me: affordable tuition and the ability to stay in New York where there is a fun and artistic city environment."

Likewise, Jasper Kerbs is looking forward to becoming a part of another community of artists, learning new techniques, and being challenged as an art student at Pratt, his top choice school.

While many Groundswell grads will be pursing a fine art degree, others like Keyla Rijo are working toward other interests. Attending Mercy College for Clinical Laboratory Science in the fall, Keyla says: "I'm excited about getting a dorm room all to myself and taking numerous honors classes. I'm super excited to be putting on a lab coat! I love science and this is just the beginning of my science life!"

To celebrate their achievements, Groundswell will be honoring our newly-minted incoming collegians on May 16 from 4 - 7 pm at our studio. We hope that you will be able to join us in sending them off at this exhibition of their work.
