In Search of One City

Sensing AND Doing Something about Income Inequality: Artists & arts groups share their strategies
Participants include Artist Volunteer Center, members of BFAMFAPhD, Groundswell, and Jody Wood with an opening performance by Theatre of the Oppressed NYC. Moderated by Caron Atlas of Arts & Democracy.

How can artists empower both themselves and others to overcome financial and social barriers? How can YOU get involved as an artist or citizen? Part panel discussion, part workshop and skill-share, this event will briefly consider the current NYC mayoral administration's progress in addressing income inequalityparticularly with respect to the specific needs and contributions of artists and arts organizations. Various artist-led initiatives will also discuss their work tackling inequality at a more grassroots level, including developing more affordable and equitable alternatives to traditional art spaces, schools and studios, and meaningful artist-community relationships.

This event is part of the exhibition "In Search of One City: Sensing (In)equality" curated by Katherine Gressel at the Old Stone House, on view August 13-October 10, 2015. Visit brooklynutopias.wordpress.com and theoldstonehouse.org for more information.
